10 magical places to take your toddler in London this Christmas

There’s something undeniably magical about Christmas in London – the twinkling lights, festive decorations, and city streets transformed. For those of us with little ones, this season brings an extra sprinkle of joy and excitement. Having my own child has helped me see the holidays through a whole new lens. Now, there’s nothing more delightful than watching my toddler’s eyes light up as he discovers all the wonders of Christmas.

The image shows a festive Christmas scene in a London setting at night. In the foreground, a classic red British telephone booth is prominently displayed, with the word "TELEPHONE" written on it. Behind the telephone booth, a colourful and vibrant Christmas tree is visible, with its lights creating a magical, bokeh effect. In the background, white historic-looking buildings with ornate columns and arched windows create a crisp, clean contrast against the bold red of the telephone box.

With December right around the corner, read on for my 2024 guide to some of the best experiences to get the most out of Christmas in London with your toddler.

1. Visit Christmas at Kew

This has become a yearly tradition for our family and a highlight that we always look forward to. The spellbinding lights and stunning installations are absolutely beautiful and make for a truly enchanting atmosphere. As you make your way around the route, the festive sounds and wafting aromas only enhance the experience.

On our first visit, our son was a tiny newborn and slept peacefully in his pram the whole time. With each consecutive visit, we’ve watched his curiosity, recognition and energetic enthusiasm blossom. Particularly as he’s now at the stage to walk the twinkling trails himself and interact with the various actors.

I highly, highly recommend a visit to Kew this Christmas!

Top tip: This event is hugely popular and tickets tend to sell out quickly – often as early as summer for the most popular dates. Early booking is a must.

2. Take a stroll around Covent Garden

Covent Garden at Christmas is truly something special. With no cobblestone left unturned by Santa’s team of designers, every corner brings that unmistakable holiday buzz.

The decorations are remarkable, with giant baubles, sparkling garlands and the famous Christmas tree at the heart of the plaza. Beyond these seasonal displays, the place is packed with plenty to keep you and your little one entertained. Whether perusing market stalls, popping into the cute boutiques and eateries or watching the street performers, it’s a sensory feast!

Top tip: Take a trip to Whittard for their delicious and free hot chocolate samples (downstairs in the shop). Thank me later.

3. Meet Father Christmas at the Museum of London Docklands

I’ve written in a previous post how the Docklands Museum is one of the best for toddlers in London. At Christmas, that is no exception. In their beautiful Victorian Santa’s Grotto, your little ones can meet the jolly old elf himself (and receive a lovely present to take home). Make sure you book this in advance as they don’t take walk-ins.

Top tips: Once you’re done, you could book into a Mudlarks play session or go explore the ever-evolving area of Canary Wharf, where the museum is located. If you’re looking for a peaceful spot away from the holiday bustle, I recommend the roof garden at Crossrail Place. It’s also a great space for your toddler to stretch their legs and stay warm in the cold.

4. Explore Christmas at the London Zoo

From 23rd November to 5th January, the London Zoo becomes a Christmas wonderland, with a range of toddler-friendly activities. Beyond the usual excitement of seeing animals, there’s so much extra holiday fun in store! Little ones can dive into Christmas crafts, join festive animal talks, and even drop by the elf post room to send letters to the North Pole. Encourage them to keep an eye out for Father Christmas, who can be spied around the zoo throughout the day.

Top tip: For a standout experience, you can book a dedicated meet and greet with Santa, but there is an additional charge for this.

5. Grab a hot chocolate or mulled wine at the Southbank Centre Winter Market

From 1st November to 26th December, immerse yourself and your little one in the Southbank Centre Winter Market’s festive atmosphere. Bundle up your toddler and head into central London for a Christmas stroll along the Thames, past rows of traditional alpine-style chalets brimming with unique finds and holiday treats.

These stalls offer a great opportunity to pick up handmade gifts for friends and family. Plus, you can warm up with the various hot beverages on sale while you browse. The market is also fully accessible, with step-free access throughout, making it easy to navigate with a pram.

Top tip: It can get quite crowded here, so try to visit on a weekday or in the mornings over the weekend for a more relaxed visit.

6. Take your little one to the Discover Children’s Story Centre in Stratford

This December, delight in the holiday-themed activities at the Discover Children’s Story Centre. Among the highlights is a snowman-themed sensory trail inspired by the beloved That’s Not My… book series. Here, children can explore different textures and sights in a cosy, hands-on environment. There are also plenty of experiences for fans of interactive storytelling. Visit the Secret Postie’s Grotto to help the letters and gifts get delivered on time, or join in with the performance in a reading of Luna Loves Christmas.

Top tip: If you want to grab some food or do a bit of festive browsing after your visit, Westfield Shopping Centre is just around the corner!

7. Watch The Snowman at the Peacock Theatre

Nothing says Christmas quite like watching Raymond Briggs’ magical, bittersweet classic, The Snowman. Even better is seeing it performed live in London at the Peacock Theatre with your toddler. This beloved story, with its timeless animations and enchanting music, instantly puts me in the holiday spirit. Our 2-year-old was absolutely mesmerised when we introduced him to the short film.

Remarkably, this stage adaptation is currently in its 27th year! It’s running from 23rd November 2024 until 4th January 2025, and is suitable for all ages. The runtime is 1 hour and 50 minutes (with a 20 minute interval) and children aged 2 and over require their own ticket.

Top tip: Book your seats closer to the aisle. This makes it easier for quick exits if needed, and lets your toddler have a clearer view of the stage.

8. Be dazzled by the London Illuminated Light Trail at Fulham Palace

This winter, from November 28th 2024 until December 22nd 2024, Fulham Palace comes alive with its enchanting London Illuminated Light Trail. This captivating trail of magical sights and sounds winds through historic palace grounds, with cosy outlets offering a steady supply of mulled wine, cider, hot chocolate and mince pies.

Enjoy live music, choirs, magic shows, circus performers and the chance to visit Father Christmas (for a small extra fee). For a special treat, you can even pick up marshmallow sticks to roast over the fire pit. Finally, end your night at a charming festive village to browse for gifts and souvenirs.

Top tip: It is advisable to bring a torch along, as the trail gets dark in places.

9. LEGOLAND at Christmas

OK, so this isn’t technically in London, but it’s too notable an experience to exclude (and it’s not too far). Starting on November 23rd, LEGOLAND in Windsor is remade into a winter wonderland, where children can enjoy popular rides like Fairy Tale Brook and the LEGO City Deep Sea Adventure

On top of the regular attractions, LEGOLAND embraces the holiday spirit with extra-special experiences. Marvel at the giant DUPLO Christmas tree, an impressive and festive centrepiece that makes for a perfect photo op. Then see if you can spot Father Christmas, journeying around the park on his sleigh with his troupe of lively, dancing elves. Or, by upgrading your tickets, go for a more personal meet-and-greet with the man himself. It’s also worth attending Ollie the Dragon’s Christmas Chaos Show – a stage performance for the whole family.

If one day isn’t enough, LEGOLAND offers festive sleepovers at its Resort Hotel and their new Woodland Village. These will help you extend the magic even further with events like the Elves’ Pyjama Party Disco and Christmas Campfire Storytime.

Top tips: To make the most of your visit, arrive early and plan your day around the most popular attractions to avoid the busiest times. Booking tickets and upgrades in advance is recommended as they tend to sell out quickly during the holiday season.

10. Visit Hamleys Toy Shop

No trip to London with a toddler during the Christmas period is complete without visiting this world-famous, seven-storey toy shop on Regent Street. As you approach the iconic store this December, you’ll be greeted by window displays designed to captivate children and adults alike. Once inside, the merriment continues, with live demonstrations and performances, interactive play areas, meet-and-greet opportunities with characters and a host of friendly elves (the store’s ever-helpful staff).

For all manner of toys, holiday treats and child-friendly experiences, Hamleys is very literally your one-stop shop.

Top tips: Visit early in the morning or on a weekday if possible to avoid the busiest crowds. Also, be sure to check Hamleys’ schedule for special Christmas events!
